Wetland 5 and Nanako Stream Enhancement
Another successful Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) project delivered for Tauranga City Council at Nanako Stream — a great example of how early collaboration drives better outcomes for clients.
Constructed as part of the wider catchment upgrade, the project delivered a stormwater treatment wetland designed to enhance water quality and support future residential development. Working alongside Tonkin + Taylor and Vitruvius, the team delivered complex earthworks, embankments, outlet structures and streamworks, including a 2050mm manhole system, large diameter pipelines, spillway reinforcement and channel re-profiling.
The project truly put the ECI model to the test, with two significant flood events during construction — including a record 274mm rainfall event that fully submerged the site. Despite this, strong planning, robust erosion and sediment controls, and a well-managed site meant damage was minimal and no significant rework was required. Most importantly, Dam 5 performed exactly as designed, attenuating peak flows and reducing downstream flood risk — a real win for the client and surrounding community.
With the project also delivered on time and under budget, we’re proud to continue our relationship with Tauranga City Council as a repeat client, delivering resilient infrastructure through collaboration, practical thinking and proven delivery
