Infrastructure Cook Islands selected MAP Projects in a competitive tender to construct the Government funded Atiu Harbour upgrade. The project involved dredging the Harbour, widening the hardstand into the makatea cliff, and re-constructing the concrete hardstand, slipway and access – giving the island a facility that actually works for the people who use it.

Atiu is remote, and that shapes everything about how we worked there. What can be shipped to site is limited, equipment breaks down, barges run late (or don’t run at all), and water shortages mean concrete pours must be delayed until the next rain. The makatea rock was harder than anyone expected — progress was slow at times, but the team kept at it. What made the difference was the people on the ground. Around 70% of the workforce were local islanders, with strong support from the Atiu Island Government, and that local knowledge and commitment ran through the whole project.

The result is a more functional, well-built Harbour that will serve the Atiu community for marine access, transport and day-to-day use for many years ahead. It’s the kind of project that reminds us why this work matters
